Keep it scannable
Players see the MOTD before joining, so a short server identity and one useful detail usually work better than a long sales message.
Free · Two lines · Live server preview
Create a colorful Message of the Day for your Minecraft server. Build two lines with classic colors and formatting, preview them like a multiplayer server-list entry, then copy a ready-to-paste motd= value.
Main tool
Choose a line, place the cursor where you want the style to begin, then click a color or formatting button.
The basics
MOTD means Message of the Day. On a Minecraft Java multiplayer server, it is the short message displayed under the server name in a player's server list. Server owners often use it to show a game mode, season, event, version, status message or short call to action.
Players see the MOTD before joining, so a short server identity and one useful detail usually work better than a long sales message.
Use the first line for your server name or main hook and the second for a game mode, event, update or community message.
One or two accent colors can make important words easy to scan. Too many rapid color changes can reduce readability.
Guide
Enter the message players should see in the server list. You can also start with one of the built-in templates.
Click Line 1 or Line 2, then place the cursor exactly where the next color or style should begin.
Use the classic color palette plus bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, obfuscated or reset formatting.
Make sure the two lines stay readable and that important information is visible at a glance.
For a normal Java server.properties file, copy the ready-to-paste motd= line. Plugins and proxies may use the & or § versions instead.
Installation
For a standard Java server, open server.properties, find the line beginning with motd=, replace its value with your generated output, save the file and restart the server.
enable-status=true
motd=\u00A76\u00A7lSURVIVAL REALM\n\u00A7aSeason 4 is live!
online-mode=true
BungeeCord, Velocity, ServerListPlus and other plugins can define the MOTD somewhere else or use different formatting syntax. Use the generated & or § output only when your specific software expects it.
Quick reference
The generator includes all 16 classic colors. For a full table with hex values, formatting explanations and custom color tools, open the dedicated Color Codes page.
Ideas
Use these structures as inspiration, then customize the wording and colors for your own server.
Better results
Put your server or network name near the beginning so returning players recognize it immediately.
A season launch, event, game mode or major update is usually more useful than filling every character.
Use bright colors on important terms, but avoid styling every word differently.
Restart or reload your server as required, then check the actual multiplayer list on the Minecraft version your players use.
Troubleshooting
Your server or plugin may expect a different syntax. Try the generated server.properties value or check the exact plugin documentation.
For server.properties, make sure the generated value contains \n between Line 1 and Line 2.
Classic color codes reset existing formatting. Insert the color first, then add bold, italic or another format afterward.
Browser rendering is only an approximation. Minecraft clients, fonts, versions, proxies and plugins can render the final result differently.
FAQ
A MOTD is the Message of the Day displayed under a server's name in the Minecraft multiplayer server list.
Classic Minecraft formatting uses a color code before the text you want to color. This generator lets you insert those codes visually and then outputs the syntax for server.properties, § codes and & plugin codes.
Use Line 1 and Line 2 in the editor. The generated server.properties output automatically inserts \n between them.
That is the Unicode escape representation of the § section sign. It is useful for Java-properties-safe output.
Many server plugins and proxies accept ampersand formatting, but support is software-specific. Use the output format documented by your server setup.
Keep both lines short enough to display clearly in the multiplayer list. This tool shows a visible-character counter and warns when a line becomes long, but the amount actually visible can vary by client, screen width and formatting.
Bedrock server configuration differs from Java server.properties. Use this tool primarily for Java-style MOTD formatting and check Bedrock server documentation for the property and formatting support used by your setup.
